You think? I always saw Lendl as the gatekeeper, not Wilander. I never really saw a definitive passing of the torch moment to be honest - more a gradual shift.

IMO, Lendl was the true "gatekeeper" of that time, but his grip was loosening w/ the emergence of Becker & Edberg! He was better than them, but each gave him heartburn during that period! Wilander was barely a placeholder IMO! He took defensive tennis to new heights of boredom! I couldn't watch him; win or lose! He was more an annoyance to Lendl as well, but instead of constant attack, it was Mats retrieval skills that unnerved Ivan at a few major events; '85 FO, '88 USO & YEC!

I think Wilander was an anomaly. He fit the time perfectly. The transition from wood to more modern rackets. I actually think he wouldn't have been as successful if the era of wood had continued, nor would he have been as successful if he was fully in the era of modern rackets. But that transition period? It was perfect for him.

Lendl was defo the gate keeper. Everyone after him had to take on some of what he did so well, particularly in terms of professionalism

I just watched the highlights and he was in big trouble. The summarisers said he was nervous early.

I am doing some work and happened to see a point on tv , between Zverev and Halys....It was the replica of that amazing point between Agassi and Federer, where Roger hits an amazing dig lob with the flick of his wrist. Halys did the same. Wow.
