Fiero is the Donald Trump of tennis fandom. We laugh with him and
at him. But I love the guy.
Really, what he is trying to mask is not only the fact that Andy Murray wrestled the #1 ranking from Novak, but Novak underwent a rather epic collapse.
ATP Ranking points on June 20, 2016 (before Wimbledon):
1. Novak Djokovic, 16950 (career high)
2. Andy Murray, 8915
In other words, Novak had almost double the ranking points as Andy, +8045, with half the season left. Novak was coming off the most impressive year and a half span in Open Era history:
Paris Masters, 2014 to Roland Garros, 2016:
- Five of Six Grand Slams won, one Final
- 17-4 out of 22 big event finals played (4 Slams, 1 TF, 12 Masters)
- 135-9 record (93.8 W%)
That second one is particularly impressive, imo: He played in 22 big events, reached the final of 21 of them, winning 17 of them. Just ridiculous.
So that's where Novak was after winning Roland Garros. After that he went out in the 3R of Wimbledon. He did come back and win the Canada Masters, but then went out in the first round of the Olympics, lost in the US Open final to Stanimal, lost in the SF of Shanghai, QF of Paris, and then the Tour Finals final to Andy.
Meaning, after that same Roland Garros, Andy won Wimbledon, Olympics Gold, then he lost in the Cincy final and the USO QF, he won his last five tournaments--Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna, Paris, and the Tour Finals--to steal the #1 ranking away. Of course it probably ruined him--or at least hastened his end--but it was one of the most impressive surges I've ever seen.
