I found out about his death minutes after I told a friend I was starting to feel that he was (in part) a victim of this whole process. It is like if some big crime organization would find some small time pocket picker, bring him in and in no time he is one of the bosses-- just to be sent in jail afterwards...

The way most mainstream networks are covering this is absolutely disgusting. First, it pains me to see them referring to "alleged plagiarism". Both his "thesis" and the works he plagiarized are available for all to see. It is not "alleged", it is an observed fact.

On top, or together with that, they spin the fact that the Mickey Mouse university that gave him the phd title kept his title. They didn't say he didn't plagiarized, they said there were "mitigating circumstances". But this is spinned into something like "they cleared him". On top of that, this is utterly absurd in itself. It means they do not know what an phd should be about. Also, the excuse itself does not make any sense. It is completely surreal.

And did not even mention the biography fiction part. These people should go to jail.

That’s part of political and politically driven academic life today, if they like him they forgive, if they hate him, they kill him twice. The second time they kill is the public reputation execution. What you’re saying they’re doing is remarkable because it doesn’t even bother these people that they’re doing it in broad daylight where everybody can see that they’re doing it, but they act as if we can’t..

it's infuriating because whatever we think of this guy, he was in that position because of Cambridge. I'm sure there are elements of the media that are keeping the focus on him intentionally, whether because of his race or just because he's a victim. But the scrutiny should remain firmly on Cambridge, and to a lesser extent the ideology that made all of this possible.

Exactly. Until they stop focusing on what pleases all the wrong sorts of people and struggle to regain credibility and integrity, this is DEI policy is a downward spiral into mediocrity and anger. And the sort of negative attention that he unfortunately deserved, but couldn’t handle, it seems. They placed him in the crosshairs, unarmed..

I think it's fair to say that the media went overboard on him. I don't care how strong you are, but when the British media goes all in on you... damn! I can think of few things more terrifying. But at the same time, he was a father. I don't understand how, if it was suicide, he would do that to his kids

Of course I did not read or watch everything that was written and said about him, but most of what I have seen, as harsh as it sounded, was basically a long list of his lies. It sounded so bad because his lies were so grotesque. Of couse, there would be scorn in the way people reported it, but... c'mon, this is all of his own making. People defending him, in the end, are complaining that all the lies were reported in the first place. Sorry but not sorry about this guy. Even if I agree that the institutions and the media have more blame to carry than him, he still new exactly what he was doing.

I can't disagree with anything you say. There were a lot of lies and he's accountable for that. Whether it was necessary to pile on in that way is the question. Ok yes, the guy is a liar. But if the dissemination of information is for the purpose of improving the human situation then we have to study what went wrong in this situation. We know people lie when they are interviewed. It is up to the employer, the institutions to properly vet these people. In the case of Cambridge, not only did they employ a fraud, but that person was responsible for educating a large number of students. The students, and society at large are the worse for this. Therefore it seems to me the focus needs to be on the institution and why their systems failed. It is clear that failures occurred due to the ideological/political position of Cambridge University. If there are individuals that need to be investigated I would argue that those who were responsible for hiring him are more at fault than him. Interestingly we have seen some of them. One of them was a black woman who has no academic background. That to me is a more pertinent direction of investigation. While we all agree about the harm caused to society and in particular his students it's not as if they were brain surgeons and they caused people to die or suffer due to their incompetence. So yes I do think there was a pile on him, and it was unnecessary. The only purpose that makes sense is a distraction away from the accountability that Cambridge University has to face. There's simply no evidence after this tragedy that this can't/won't happen again, and that to me is an appalling thing

This is a brutal, unfortunate aspect of the British media and politics in general. But - if he was a right winger and the left got him in their sights for the same sin, who knows what might happen? They’re open to murder, as a political statement…

you're missing a part of it though. The person on the right will still have quiet support from those who have a similar view. When the media (who are generally lefties) go on the attack on one their own, everyone is against that person. They're completely isolated. That's worse

I agree the media maybe went in too hard, but I think that’s a consequence of years of these cheap oafish policies pushed by the left. He’s definitely unfortunate though, he should never have gotten so far..

Puuuhlease….this case is one of a fantasist & plagiarist and the lack of intellectual standards & academic oversight by Cambridge, I have no issues with that coverage. Ironically both talented & worthy White and nonwhite academics were victims of Cambridge’s apparently following in love with Arday’s alleged background story ( autistic, did not speak until age 11, did not tread or write until age 18, etc) & being bypassed for him.

But to say the right wing media outlets/journalists aren’t as reprehensible & opportunistic & predatory is laughable and naive to the nth degree, IMO. The media circle around stories & latch on mercilessly, and that’s not distinguished as only a leftist or rightist tactic exclusively.

I suppose it’s because he was currently in the news, and the story and investigators fresh, when he died. Meanwhile I see a vigil is taking place for Arday, where the usual suspects are accusing the media of racism for pursuing the story. Of course they’d pursue it. It’s a legit story. It’s another Claudine Gay moment in the ivory towers. Ironically, however, it was racism that got him promoted, in the first place…

It is reprehensible, yes, but it is of way less importance than the actual case. Media being criminally reprehensible is not exactly news, it is simply the way of the world (unfortunately).

But one man's story that shows unequivocally that there is a monster flaw in high education -- that simply destroys the credibility of one of the most recognizable universities in the world, it is something of another level. So, no, I would not say "as reprehensible".

Oh I agree that Cambridge is being put totally under the media microscope, and it should be, it’s an institutional icon/symbol in the UK in a way I’m guessing such US colleges as Harvard or Yale are, probably more so.

“reprehensible” in the sense that the media in general can be relentless with individuals and stories which in some cases are blown out of proportion. This particular story and individual, there are myriad reasons why the story had legs. Was there a right & left bent agenda to some of the stories, DUH of course there was, but again sooo nany threads on this one;

I hate to speak ill of the dead but as a runner, the preposterous 30 marathons in 35 days is fantastical in the worst sense of the world, also what struck me as some incredibly unattractive non academic trait was when fellow professors emailed him regarding alleged plagiarism he literally called the cops on several of them on grounds of harassment, imagine an academic who cannot tolerate a discourse or even disagreements without referring to “victimhood” almost immediately and calling the cops because of an “attack” by concepts/ideas.

Reminded me a bit of the infamous Lance Armstrong who was very heavy handed with his tactics threatening litigation to any person who implied he had banned substances while winning his tour de France’s.

I tend to agree with you. Furthermore, I think the pile on Arday made the possibility of suicide real. My issue with the media is that they are cheating the public out of the bigger story, I do agree that the issue of right or left bias in the media is irrelevant. If Cambridge University did this with Arday, what other nonsensical hiring decisions have they made. How has this ideology been used in the past at Cambridge. Who are the people at Cambridge who are responsible. That's what we the public need to know
