Location

DATE: 18 January - 1 February 2026
SURFACE: Hard
PRIZE MONEY: A$49,171,000
FIELD SIZE: 128
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Jannick Sinner

The Tournament:

Nicknamed "The Happy Slam", The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year and has been staged since 1905. Prior to 1988 the tournament was played on grass. Since 1988 two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used at Melbourne Park (formely known as Flinders Park) - Rebound Ace to 2007 and then Plexicushion.

The competition features men's and women's singles, men's, women's and mixed doubles, juniors’ championships, wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events.

The showcourts are the Rod Laver Arena (15,000 seats), Margaret Court Arena (7,500 seats), Melbourne Arena (9,600 seats), and two other show courts (2&3) with approximately 3,000 seats. The three main arenas have retractable roofs.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria and is widely regarded as one of the world’s most liveable cities, frequently ranking near the top of global liveability indexes. It is Australia’s second-largest city after Sydney, with a metropolitan population of just over 5 million people.

Founded in 1835 during the Victorian gold rush era, Melbourne sits on the northern edge of the expansive natural harbour of Port Phillip Bay. From its bayside suburbs, the city fans out toward the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges, the Mornington Peninsula, and the renowned wine regions of the Yarra Valley — giving it a rare mix of urban density, coastline, and countryside within easy reach.

At the heart of the city is Federation Square, a modern civic precinct on the banks of the Yarra River that serves as a cultural meeting point, hosting major sporting broadcasts, festivals, exhibitions, and live performances. Just across the river, Southbank is home to the Melbourne Arts Precinct, which includes Arts Centre Melbourne—one of the largest performing arts centres in the Southern Hemisphere and the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum, with world-class Australian and Indigenous collections.

Often described as Australia’s sporting capital, Melbourne is synonymous with major international events, none more so than the Australian Open. Each January, the city comes alive as players and fans from around the world converge on Melbourne Park, drawn not only by world-class tennis, but by the city’s vibrant food culture, café scene, street art, and famously unpredictable weather—sometimes all four seasons in a single day.

The only major Alcaraz has yet to conquer is the AO, and should he triumph, the 22 yo will become the youngest man in history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
Standing in his way is the 2 time defending champion Jannik Sinner, if he wins he will become the only player in history along side Novak Djokovic to win the tournament 3 times in a row.

Matteo Berrettini vs de Minaur who has a draw from Hell!
Shelton vs Humbert
Hurkacz vs Bergs
Perricard vs Baez
Bublik vs Brooksby
Zverev vs Diallo

Also we could see in round 3 Fonseca vs Sinner!

Possible Djokovic milestones at 2026 Australian Open

1st round - 100th Australian Open win (would be his 3rd slam with at least 100 wins)
3rd round - 102nd Australian Open win (ties Federer)
4th round - 103rd Australian Open win (passes Federer to become all-time leader)

I don't doubt you, but doesn't that seem surprising that he got to 100 wins at 2 other Majors before he did in Australia, which he's won the most times? I know funny stats happen in such a long career, but wouldn't that mean he's skipped Oz, or gone out early more times than the others? Surely Wimbledon is the other, and I guess the French, where he's often made SFs and Fs?

OK, I see it in his Career Statistics page on Wikipedia. It's close...99 wins at AO, 102 at the French, and 103 at Wimbledon. Early exits at the AO.

He was forced to skip the AO in 2022, and he had an early exit in 2017. Other than that, his only other early exits were his early years (2005 and 06). But if he didn't miss 2022, he probably has the most wins there already.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that Novak doesn't hold any of the match win records at the slams. He's 3 short of Federer at Wimbledon, and 3 short of Connors (and 5 short of 100) at the US Open. Novak could hold the match win records at 3 of the slams, and 100 at all 4, by the end of the year. He has 101 at the French Open (11 behind Rafa), and would probably need to play until 2028 (provided he has 3 good runs) to take that record.

Not "forced to skip" in 2022, he just elected not to conform to the rules, and hoped he could skirt them, or was above them. Didn't work out, but that was his choice. Funny how that one slipped my mind. He lost 2nd round 2017, then 4th round to Cheung in 2018, during his walkabout period.

Yeah, I really don't get why this is still being brought up, as if it's true. As if he was hard done by. I heard Piers Morgan apologise to him, like the slippery stinky fish that he is. Novak made a choice and then thought that the rules don't apply to him. He did the same when he was DQ'd from the USO. "Sure, I hit her in the mush with the ball but so what? She's not hurt. C'mon, dont you know who i am?"

"Yeah, a fricking lowlife. GTFOH!"

Speaking of Novak, the internet seems to be full of concern for his not very good practice session the other day, and neck pain, and etc. I haven't really looked at the draw, but MSN seems to think that Alcaraz got a dreamy one. Djokovic in Sinners half. I see you mentioned that de Minaur got a draw from Hell.

Yes I saw the video of Novak and his trainer giving his massage on his neck, though he appeared okay when he played Tiafoe in a practice match, we all know he is a Drama King, I would not read too much into that.Yes de Minaur plays Berrettini in his first round match then is projected to play Alcaraz in the QFs. Alcaraz and de Minaur played a practice match yesterday and Alcaraz too good for de Minaur, beating him in straight sets
This is de Minaur draw
R1 Berrettini
R2 Navone
R3 Tiafoe
R4 Bublik
QF Alcaraz
SF Zverev
F Sinner

A memo to both Shelton and Dimitrov just watching the mens final in Adelaide between Humbert and Machac both played great tennis to reach the final, which is going into a 3rd set
Shelton first round match is Humbert, and Grigor first round match is Machac, you better bring your best tennis, both Humbert and Machac are playing the kind of tennis that can defeat you both.

I thought Berrettini v de Minaur could be a "popcorn' match sad to say Matteo has not being able to practice, playing someone like de Minaur who is a 'energizing bunny' around the court, you have to be 100% physically fit.
