What got Novak disqualified in USO is also his behaviour leading to the incident. He was acting wild minutes before, which contributed to the final decision.
He should have been warned before for his poor behavior, and it would have gone down easier when he got DF'd. But it is also the difference of actually hurting someone. Not ejecting him would have smacked hugely of favoritism.
I agree, looks to me like media is trying to blow this thing up and Tiafoe sounded a bit salty in a presser.
I didn't think he sounded salty. He said it was comical that nothing happened, and that rule is not applied consistently, which is true. He was asked about it, and that's all he said. I don't think he acted like Musetti should have been ejected, which would have sounded like sour grapes. Before he was asked about that, he was generous in his praise of Musetti's play, IMO.

There is room for discretion in the rule. Personally, I missed that part of the match, and I haven't found a clip long enough to provide context.

If he got a warning, then that's the end of it. Foe is likely singing sour grapes because he's not good enough to beat players ranked ahead of him. He has a difficult time w/ folks ranked below him as it is
According to the NYT, he got a warning. And, in that case, Tiafoe was wrong to say "nothing happened," so then he does mean maybe he should have been defaulted. It seemed like a lot of nothing.

But a couple of years ago, if you remember, doubles player Miyu Kato and her partner were defaulted after Kato accidentally hit a ball kid in the neck when returning a ball to her — not even swatting it in frustration. They originally got a warning, but the other team complained, and the got defaulted. That, to me, seems a total misreading of the rule. Some years back, Roger did the same thing...hit a ball kid when trying to, helpfully, nudge the ball towards him with his racquet. Roger apologized and petted him on his head, and they moved on. Someone needs to clarify this rule to the umpires. I think they should rewrite it for clarity.

And Zvevev starting to look down and out. Can't keep up the intensity? Over a guy 10 years older? This is not the heart of a champion. Mopey loser.

I've only seen that part where he is talking that nothing happened, so I understood it as if he wanted something more like DQ.

How do you defeat someone you've consciously given all due deference? When players like Medvedev & Zverev have said in interviews, on the court after being schooled yet again that "Novak is the GOAT!" :face-with-hand-over-mouth::fearful-face::yawningface::astonished-face:

You can have a healthy respect for someone's accomplishments w/o yielding ground. They are weak, period. In fact, I would think you would want to measure your game against theirs to see where improvement is needed.

Like I said, he's brought nothing new to the party. In the longest rally of the match, I saw him twice hit an OH right back to his opponent. What! All this time on tour w/ a brother who was a S/V, he still has no clue what to do at net.

That's because it's the same ole same. Dude been on the losing end of so many matches and hasn't brought anything different to the party.
Exactly. He's that definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results. This is also why I say his talent is overrated. He can get past journeyman with this stuff, but not the top players. He doesn't just refuse to change his patterns. I'm convinced it's all he's got. His passivity and defensiveness is innate. He has a brother who is a great S&V guy, and he can't learn any version of it. How many times has he been burned today by the drop shot? He has weapons, and he's tall, but he has no tennis IQ, for another thing. How many times today did he lose a point he was controlling by playing the wrong shot?

It's as if he's been conditioned: I AM A DALEK. I ONLY KNOW ONE WAY TO PLAY. CANNOT CHANGE. EXTERMINATE NEW PLAYS. EXTERMINATE!!!!

It's to be expected of MOST players outside of the BIG 3 & other Greats who grew during their tenures at the top of the rankings! Look at the previous generation w/ Ferrer, Berdych, Gasquet, & so many others who didn't have the nerve to go outside their comfort zone! Even though losing again & again to the elites of the game, they never tried anything different outside of bashing the ball from the baseline! Confidence is a tricky thing w/ failures given levels of relevance! :astonished-face::yawningface::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

All it took for Novak tonight is a little bit of creativity and needless to mention way higher tennis IQ. Zverev will never learn to try something new and he will never change.
