The Wuhan Open

The Wuhan Open is one of the premier events on the WTA Tour and a cornerstone of the Asian hard-court swing. First held in 2014, the tournament quickly established itself as one of the most prestigious stops on the women's calendar before returning triumphantly in 2024 following a four-year hiatus.

As a WTA 1000 event, the Wuhan Open attracts many of the world's leading players, with 56 singles competitors and 28 doubles teams battling for valuable ranking points during the closing stages of the season. Positioned just weeks before the WTA Finals, the tournament plays an important role in determining the year's top performers, often producing high-quality matches between the game's biggest stars.

The tournament is played at the impressive Optics Valley International Tennis Centre, one of China's leading tennis facilities. The modern complex features seven competition courts, including an impressive Central Court, providing a first-class stage for one of Asia's most important women's sporting events. The outdoor hard courts reward aggressive baseline play, athletic movement, and tactical versatility, creating exciting contests throughout the tournament.

Since its inception, the Wuhan Open has earned a reputation for exceptional organisation, enthusiastic crowds, and elite competition. The tournament has welcomed many of the sport's biggest names, with Grand Slam champions and world No. 1 players regularly competing for the prestigious title. Its return to the WTA calendar has been warmly welcomed by players and fans alike, reaffirming Wuhan's place among the world's leading tennis destinations.

With its world-class facilities, passionate spectators, and prominent position on the WTA calendar, the Dongfeng Voyah · Wuhan Open continues to showcase the very best of women's tennis while highlighting the growing popularity of the sport across Asia.

Wuhan

Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province and one of central China's largest and most important cities. Situated at the confluence of the Yangtze and Han rivers, it has long served as a strategic centre for commerce, transportation, education, and industry. Today, with a metropolitan population of more than 13 million people, Wuhan is recognised as one of China's fastest-growing and most influential urban centres.

Often referred to as the "Chicago of China" because of its importance as a transport hub, Wuhan connects the country's north, south, east, and west through an extensive network of high-speed rail, highways, river shipping, and air travel. This central location has helped establish the city as a major centre for business, research, and technological innovation.

Wuhan is also rich in history and culture. One of its most famous landmarks is the Yellow Crane Tower, an iconic pagoda overlooking the Yangtze River that has inspired Chinese poets and artists for more than a thousand years. Nearby, the historic Yangtze River Bridge was the first bridge to span the mighty Yangtze, symbolising the city's role in connecting different regions of China.

Nature also plays an important part in Wuhan's identity. The expansive East Lake is one of the largest urban lakes in China, surrounded by gardens, walking trails, and parks that provide a peaceful escape from the bustling city. During spring, the lake is particularly famous for its cherry blossom displays, attracting visitors from across the country.

In recent years, Wuhan has invested heavily in international sporting events and modern infrastructure, including the impressive Optics Valley International Tennis Centre, home of the Wuhan Open. The city's combination of historic landmarks, contemporary architecture, vibrant university culture, and world-class sporting facilities has made it an increasingly popular destination for international visitors.

As one of China's most dynamic cities, Wuhan offers an engaging mix of tradition and innovation. From riverside skylines and ancient temples to cutting-edge technology parks and elite women's tennis, it provides a fitting backdrop for one of the WTA Tour's premier tournaments.

Sad news for Clara Taurson who has been hampered by a persistent back condition that has plagued her throughout the 2026 season, she was forced to retire in her match against Bouzkova, losing the 1st set 1-6 and then falling behind in the 2nd set 0-2, Tauson ultimately decided to withdtaw

Late withdrawals,
Zheng who just won the WTA1000 Beijing title has a right shoulder injury and has withdrawn
Andreeva runner up in Beijing has also withdrawn citing a change of schedule
Olinynkova withdrawn due to right ankle injury
Kalinskaya illness.

Lucky Losers/Alternates

Sabalenka will player either Li or Osorio in her first round match, looks like she will reclaim #1 in race after this tournament

Eala (13) being defeated by Shi ranked #217, indicates Eala's heavy tournament schedule is finally taking a toll this year
As a Top 20 player next year she definitely needs to cut out the 125s and some 250s from her schedule
Previously she lost #85 ranked player in Asian Games and in Singapore 500 she lost to a player ranked #180
