The Tournament:

The WTA Finals (formerly known as the WTA Tour Championships or WTA Championships) is the season-ending championship of the WTA Tour. It is the most significant tennis event in the women's annual calendar after the four majors, as it features the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams based on their results throughout the season.

The tournament predates the WTA Tour and started in 1972 as the championship tournament of the Tour's predecessor: the Virginia Slims Circuit. Since 2003, the tournament has used a unique format not seen in other WTA Tour events: the players are separated into two groups of four, within which they each play three round-robin matches. The top two players or teams from each group after the round-robin stage move on to a knock-out format in the semifinals and final to determine the champion.

The WTA Finals has the largest prize money and ranking points after the majors. The most successful player in both singles and doubles history is Martina Navratilova, with eight singles and 13 doubles titles.

In the tournament's current format, the champion can earn a maximum of 1,500 ranking points, if they win the event as an undefeated champion in the round-robin stage.

About Riyadh:

Riyadh
is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia. It is also the capital of the Riyadh Province and the centre of the Riyadh Governorate. The current form of the metropolis emerged as an offshoot of the eponymous walled town following the dismantling of its defensive fortifications in the 1950s, after which the city underwent several phases of expansion and urbanization.

It is the largest city on the Arabian Peninsula, and is situated in the center of the an-Nafud desert, on the eastern part of the Najd plateau. The city sits at an average of 600 meters (2,000 ft) above sea level, and receives around 5 million tourists each year, making it the forty-ninth most visited city in the world and the 6th in the Middle East. Riyadh had a population of 7.0 million people in 2022, making it the most-populous city in Saudi Arabia, 3rd most populous in the Middle East, and the 38th most populous in Asia.

WTA Race to the Finals
Keys has dropped 60 points in the Race to Riyadh putting Rybakina at No 6, assuming this means Rybakina will indeed be the 6th seed for the finals.

1. Sabalenka 9870
2. Swiatek 8195
3. Gauff 6563
4. Anisimova 5887
5. Pegula 5183
6. Rybakina 4350
7. Keys 4335
8. Paolini 4325

Mirra Andreeva missed the cut by just 10 points and will be the 1st alternative ( replacement)

Each round - robin match is worth 3 points.
If players ( or teams) are tied at the conclusion of the group stage., the head to hear winner advances. If there is a three -way tie, the tie breaker is determined by matches played, total sets won, and total games won.
The top 2 singles players ( and teams) from each group advance to their respective SFs, where the group winners takes on the second - place finishes from the opposing group.
The SFs and finals are single elimination.

Preview of day 1,

1st doubles match not before 3.30pm,
Errani/Paolini (1) vs Muhammad/Schuurs

Not before 6pm
Swiatek (2) vs Keys (7) Swiatek leads their H2H 5-2. Even though Keys trails head to head series, she actually holds a 2-1 career advantage on a hard court.

Followed by,

Anisimova (4) vs Rybakinba (6) Head to Head they have never played before.

Kudermetova/Mertens (4) vs Hsieh/Ostapenko (6) This will be their first match on a hard court.

Seeing I wont be watching 'live' I will post the results after the singles and doubles matches

I am not surprised Elena has the game to beat anyone in the Top Ten, are the courts fast Hoergren? her game does suit fast courts
According to the commentators it's some of the fastest courts and I think the low water in the air helps to that. Actually it has been some good matches.

Thanks, Elena's game suits fast courts, especially when her game is 'on' I am not surprised she defeated Iga,
