Women's Quarter Final Round Up from Rio

World Number 2 Angelique Kerber continued her superb 2016 with a dominant display en route to a 6-1 6-2 drubbing of Britain’s Johanna Konta in the Quarter Finals of the Ladies Singles in Rio. Kerber would be the first woman to medal for Germany in the Tennis event since the great Steffi Graf back in 1992.

Kerber broke Konta in the opening game and never looked back, winning all but three of the remaining games in a match that was done and dusted in an hour.

Keys to Success
America’s Madison Keys sailed into the Semi-Finals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over the Russian Darya Kasatkina in just 53 minutes on the back of some impressive shotmaking.

Keys is the last remaining American woman standing in the tournament and the fact was not lost on her.

“It’s so nice to look out into the crowd and see all the American flags. You see all these people who have come from home to cheer us on and there’s really no feeling like that.”

Keys will need to be at her best in the Semi-Finals where she faces Angelique Kerber but is on a nice run, winning 25 of her last 29 matches.

Is the Real Petra Standing Up?

Petra Kvitova has had an ugly 2016 by her standards. She has failed to find any sort of consistency up until the Rio Olympics. Now she is playing the two-time Wimbledon champion we remembered. It’s no coincidence that Kvitova also raises her game when playing for her country. She issued a beating to Serena-slayer Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine in just 48 minutes and dropped only 2 games in the process.

Puig issues Double Bagel to reserve a place in the Semis
Flying under the radar in Rio, Monica Puig of Puerto Rico continued her great run with a double bagel thrashing of Germany’s Laura Siegemund. The 6-1, 6-1 scoreline was a carbon copy of her result against Garbine Murguruza. Puig has a shot at becoming Puerto Rico’s first ever gold medallist. She plays Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals.
