Why Do You DISLIKE so and so?

Since the other thread was closed given that we were going off topic, here's a thread where Fed Fans can pretend they don't dislike Rafa even more because he beats Federer (since you know, it's apparently NOT human nature to hate watching your "enemies" succeed).

Ahem. Almost went on an agenda-driven tangent there. So...why do you dislike the players you dislike?

But keep in mind personal attacks will not be tolerated. It's one thing to state why you dislike Player X; it's quite another to insult the user who posted that.

I honestly don't "dislike" any player, although I dislike things about certain players. For instance:

Rafa: His seemingly pouty demeanor and occasionally unsportsmanlike attitude, oh yeah, and the fact that there's quite often a mysterious excuse for why he lost X tournament. His dominance of Roger has nothing to do with it. Really.
Novak: The shirt tearing. It has toned down, though.
Andy: Excuses, whining, temper. Take some personal responsibility, Andy.

I used to hate Petr Korda. It wasn't because of the drugs ban, because I didn't like the git even before it. That only confirmed him to be a shifty bass turd in my eyes. It was many things. His oafish scissors jump when he was happy, then there was the time he wiped some damp off the court in an indoor match, then immediately wiped his face with the same towel and the crowd screeched and booed and vomited. He was shifty, and I rooted against him every match he played.

I never liked them two distasteful lefty Irish Yanks. I remember as a youngster watching the 1980 Wimbledon final, and McEnroe skipped through the first set 6-1 in jig-time, and Bjorn was struggling, and in great misery I went out the back and started slamming tennis balls against the wall. 1981, Connors went two sets up on Borg, and a similar anxiety gripped me. That was one of the most satisfying matches I ever saw, because in the fifth set, Borg faced - I think 3 bp's at 2-1 down (it was something like that, at 30-40, and 2 bp's at ad), and each time he calmly swatted them with aces. He went on to win 6-4. I detested those two because they were cheats, basically. There was no limits to what they'd do to steal a point.

That sort of desperate stuff never bothered Borg - and in fact, they dialled it back totally against him out of respect, which is proof, when you think about it, that their explosions were an act - but it terribly affected Lendl when he was young, and his inability to handle it, the hysteria and yelping, was a painful thing to see...

I don't like one trick ponies, those towering giants that serve big, but can't move fast enough to outrun a garden slug. I don't need to name them.

I don't like talented players who don't do everything they can to build upon what they have - Safin, Nalbandian, Monfils, Fognini - so frustrating.

I don't like Murray's running tirades with himself on the court, that he forgets which body part to grab when he feigns injury... is it the right leg? No... it was the left. Now it's the back. :nono

Old timers I didn't like... Agassi, Lendl, Borg, Becker, Courier

I can agree with everything except on Safin and Borg; Bjorn my personal fave and I believe Safin to be the most gifted tennis player since Ilie Nastase! Both too talented for their own good I guess which kept them from winning more majors! :nono :angel: :dodgy:

I can agree with everything except on Safin and Borg; I believe Safin to be the most gifted tennis player since Ilie Nastase! Both too talented for their own good I guess which kept them from winning more majors!

How do I say this? I liked what Safin's game, when he played it. He had so much talent, won two Slams, but could have had so many more. So, while I liked his game - what he didn't do with it made it impossible for me to like him.

Nobody really until recently.
Venus (for a short time, after rofl on Centre Court after beating Davenport in the '05 Wimby final. She found some class. I think.)
Sharapova (those screams. Horrible. And how she gets all that attention compared to Serena. Why? Blond Air? Figure like a stick? pffffftttttt)
Azarenka (another one with a bad attitude, those MTOs, and that gawd awful hooting. Unwatchable)

I "H-word" the fist-pumping/lawn mower starting. I "H-word" the grunting. I "H-word" all the "VAMOS"-ing. I "H-word" his time wasting, pre-serve routine. I "H-word" all his little "tics". I "H-word" his style of play. And I especially "H-word" the fact that he has been so damn good!

I dislike Andy Murray (on the court) because of his constant whining/pouting and because he acts like every single point that he loses is on his racquet. The only time I root for Murray is when he plays Folks.

I dislike the fact that I like F3. If he were any other player, I'd most likely "H-word" him, because his on-court demeanor/behavior is juvenile and amateurish, which I "H-word".

F3 is a good guy, by all accounts. He is just bloody too emotional, I guess that's the reason I don't mind certain players having little tantrums on court as I feel they can't help it sometimes. And talking about emotional, who better to like that than me.:snicker

Players I dislike:

- Jon Isner: I have nothing against paint. Believe me. I do have a problem however, with watching paint dry. I have nothing against slow motion. It's an underrated technology. I do have a problem with real life slow motion, on the other hand.

- Milos Raonic: I don't how to put it so I'll try to be very delicate...he has such a freaking punchable face. He's also boring as hell to watch and more limited than a buy one get one free offer.

- Stan Wawrinka: to be honest this one is irrational (as opposed to rationally wanting to punch Raonic in the face). But something about his demeanor has always bothered me. He strikes me as someone who's trying to very carefully camouflage an inferiority complex but I could be just talking out of my ass.

- Nicolas Almagro: he acts like he's always got something up his rearend. He also can't go 4 consecutive strokes without ripping the ball from improbable positions, mainly resulting in unforced errors.

- Gael Monfils: never really liked the circus as a kid.

- Novak Djokovic: this is exhibit A of how hard it is to shake off first impressions. In my defense, my "first impression" of Djokovic lasted for years, but even when he changed, it didn't. The infamous "he's beatable" episode, the celebrations, the most obnoxious family this side of the Brady Bunch. Then all of that changed (well the family just started being less visible and/or less animated), but I just couldn't like the guy. He says the right things now, acts the right way, is a great ambassador for the sport, and is kinda decent at playing tennis. Still annoys me. To his immense credit, he managed to tone down my vitriol a great amount for the past few years which is ultimately a more impressive achievement than any potential calendar slam.

I don't like Novak Djokovic, and I'll say it has much to do with Broken's notion that we don't like players that threaten our favorites. Until 2011, he wasn't much of a threat to Rafa, and I thought Nadal had his number, in the big matches. My biggest objection to him, beyond his irritating box, was that he tax-sheltered in Monaco, which I found to be hugely hypocritical, for one so willing to wrap himself in the Serbian flag. Since 2011, it has been because he's a threat to my favorite.

By the same token, Federer, who I never liked, has grown on me a bit. Specifically because he doesn't threaten Rafa, match to match. The threat is records, and a lot of that is not controllable by H2H. As an aging lion, I can appreciate his game, even if I do find him arrogant and too self-entitled.

Beyond the top guys, I never liked Berdych. And have failed at any attempts to rehabilitate: Gulbis, Dimitrov, Tomic, Cilic and Wawrinka, for various personal failings but mainly because they refuse to fulfill expectations.

Then there's Kygrios: most don't like him, unless you're an Aussie, it seems. But I'm almost pulling for him to do well. He'd be very polarizing, which could be fun.

Hmmm... there are very few players that I would say that I actively dislike. I don't really like Raonic, for the net incident, but that's so long ago my visceral emotions are dulling over time! I have never warmed to Sharapova (she's probably the only tennis player who I'll probably support whoever she's playing against )

For me it's more about styles generally. Over the years, I've even grown to like watching Rafa play a bit more. I recall in 2010(?) watching some of his displays in awe. He was far more aggressive, bigger serve etc, and wasn't just hacking his way through a match

I will however say that the time wasting and excuses (albeit more from his camp and fans), and disingenuous modesty don't sit well with me. But again it's really just personal taste. But even with all of these points, it's more in the moment. Although the excuses that arise from the media and Rafa-fans sometimes p1$$es me off.

At the end of the day my life is too full and happy to exert a lot of time disliking tennis players who in most cases I haven't met personally and people on the internet (Nadal-fans) who I'm never going to meet. I would feel really sad for those who do
