Just a small update as Viktor Troicki has moved 116 places up to 292 in the world rankings by reaching the final at the Como challenger. Hopefully he wins the whole thing and bags even more points.

Nice. Just saw that Troicki won the Como challenger so he went from world number 292 by reaching the final to 254 by winning it. He's making steady progress.

Just a reminder. Andy Murray took off for back surgery after USO last year and did not
play the rest of the year.

As we have reached that point of time this year, Andy Murray has ZERO points to
defend this year. Murray's expected ranking at the end of USO is 10 (even though he
went in ranked 9 and lived up to his last years result, Kei has passed him).

People should not misinterpret the fact that he has 0 points to defend as his
ranking can only increase from now on until the end of year. That is false. Even
though he has only 0 points to defend, his rankings can still go down if more
players pass him.

ALERT: Kei has now clinched #8 in the rankings with his win today in semifinals.

This is important because he will get good seeding in all the remaining tournaments
of the year and also get the first round bye in the Masters tournaments.

In race rankings, he is at #5 and almost virtually certain to make it to London.

This would mean that his draw will continue to be very tough and he will not get

Players seeded 5-12 have the same chance as each other of facing a Djokovic or Nadal or Federer in the QFs, so in that sense it makes not so much difference.

Not getting a bye is extra time on court, this can be a good or a bad thing.

The other difference is the opponent in the last 16. Murray can currently face Ferrer, Berdych, Raonic or Nishikori, if the results follow seeding. If he was in the top 8 at the expense of Kei, he would have to face Nishikori, Cilic, Dimitrov or Tsonga. Dare I say that, actually, when you look at those lists and ignore everything else, he may even be better off ranked where he is, than higher up?

Time will tell... The fact is if he doesn't rediscover his mojo and continues to play like the rest of the guys in the 5-12 rankings or worse than some of them, it's all rather inconsequential. Just so long as he avoids slipping outside of the top 12, because that's the stage at which you start to look at 4th rounds against Nole or Rafa in Australia. That shouldn't happen though as there are no points to defend between now and then.

I added his country to Bagnis, who is the newcomer into the top 100 because I am assuming people are not familiar with his name.
Thiem who keps rising turned 21 during the USO.
Special Kudos for Kei to make the top 8 for the first time and I am still amazed by Burgos who at 34 found hid way into the top 70, by reaching R3 at the USO.

Thiem will drop around 200 of his 1094 points by the end of this year, but a good run or two in the closing weeks of the year and he could get his first slam seeding in Australia. That's a good achievement for a 21 year old these days. It'll be interesting to see how he does from there because it starts getting pretty tough to compete with your peers once you get around the top 30, they tend to have titles or an odd QF/SF Masters 1000 run around those spots.

When I updated the site's rankings lists earlier today, it felt odd seeing him that low. First time since June 2008 -- that's a long time.

IMO, it was inevitable! I saw it as "over-achieving" on Murray's part and it all finally caught up with him! That style of defensive counter-punching will always make the player "pay" for it eventually; aches, pains, injuries, and in general being "run down" after a few years of success! :nono :angel:
