BTW,
Zverev's Shanghai loss means Jannik Sinner will top 2026 M1000/YEC Bonus Pool Standings
What is means in practical terms is that $4.5 million Sinner could have received will go back to the tournament, any player who misses more than 3 M1000 forfeits his bonus pool share.
Zverev 2460 points and Fils 2260 points are currently best positioned t finish as #2 in these standing which could earn one of the $2.5 million.

Okay Foki lets serve this match out 5-4 and win your first Masters 1000 title at 5-4
This has been an enthralling battle, the roof being closed, I am watching the ladies final in Wuhan, which has just started as well.
Jodar too many UFE in this final set, though he started like an House on Fire in the 1st set winning 6-1
3 CH points for Foki what a comeback down a set and a break in the final set
Foki has claimed a Maiden Masters 1000 in Shanghai........3rd title of the season
Vamos Foki 16 76(6) 64
Well done to Jodar what a tournament you had being the youngest finalist in Shanghai

He needed to win it in straights. He was never going to outlast Foki in the stamina dept. Something his coaching staff will want to address going forward. He does improve his standings in the final 8 though.

Agree, though he is only 20 and has time to work on his endurance and stamina ( back to watching the ladies final in Wuhan)

Foki writing some kind season. Went from never winning a title to winning 3 including a M1000. Was it last year, the DC team didn't select him to play and they lost early?

Foki apparently wasnt available to play some of those ties for Spain last year, and he wasnt picked in their final team where they met Italy in the final last year
I think the message on the camera was meant for David Ferrer, Foki apparently wants to be in the DC team this year, Ferrer hasnt made his final choices

Fokina simply stayed in the match and found a way to win. The game where he broke back in the second, he lost the first point, seemed just about to give up. But he didn't, played every point, got the break back and maiden MS1000 title 90 minutes of effort later. Never say never. Well done!

It's not how you start, it's how you finish, isn't it? Rafa started on fire only to run out of steam in the end.

Foki has moved to a career high of No 13 after winning Masters Shanghai title
Jodar has moved to a career high of No 11 being the runner up

I have put the latest ATP Live Race rankings ( after Shanghai Masters) on the Ranking post

This is a Fun Stat,

Since married Foki has won his 3 ATP Titles :), also he is the first Spanish player to win in Shanghai
Another important fact, which makes Foki a great person off the court is he founded "Adoptos" in 2021 a platform that connects people looking to adopt or foster a pet with shelters and rescues across Spain.

To be fair, my memory was just the first part, then I did a bit of digging on the later stuff.

Stat time. in the Open Era, there have been 129 new big title winners (I'm not counting guys who won Slams or other big event equivalents before the Open Era, like Rosewall, Laver, Gimeno, etc). Davidovich Fokina won his first at age 27, making him one of 15 players to win their first at 27 or older. Of those 15 players, only Wawrinka won more than a single Masters. So we have:

  • 129 new big title winners in the Open Era
  • 15 players won their first at age 27 or older
  • Only one of the 15 won more than a single Masters (Wawrinka)
  • The other 14: At age 27 - Pavel, Portas, Davidovich Fokina; at age 28 - Mantilla, Gilbert, Wawrinka; at age 29 - Henman; at age 30 - Ferrer, Pioline, Pernfors, Dibbs; at age 31 - Ljubicic, Carreno Busta; at age 32 - Isner, Fognini.
In other words, most of the 15 are top 10-20 guys who snuck in a big event later in their career. The best of the group are probably Ferrer and Dibbs, both of whom were regulars in the top 10 during their prime.

Anyhow, no reason why he can't win another, but obviously this was him taking advantage of a rare opportunity.
