It has finally been confirmed:

http://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2013/09/serena-guaranteed-no-1-year-end-ranking/49290/

She can gain points in Beijing and is defending points at the YEC. She does have a few points to defend early in the year, but she has a lot she can gain in Australia and Wimbledon. She doesn't really have as much to defend as other players early on in the season until Miami and beyond. So it looks like with this YE#1 locked down, she is pretty much on target to pass Monica Seles and move into the top 5 of all time weeks at number 1. Depending on how she does next year maybe even passing Hingis is doable.

This is how a year end number one's resume is suppose to look like, Slams, Premier events, smaller events, and a overwhelming winning record against the other top 5 and 10 players.

And she didn't have to play 20 tournies to do it.

That and much more according to Steffi Graf

Williams is going to have an all time career high number of matches played in a season..which isn't saying much, but it prob helped with her career longevity.

she might be nearly there already, she on about 64 or so at the momen..with whatever tourneys she has left.

It is interesting to observe that for someone with 17 slams, this is just the 3rd
year to finish as #1. Even Martina Hingis has finished #1 at YE three times with just
5 Slams.

Ignoring smaller tournaments for many years was the reason why this happened
for Serena.

How many points will the winner of Beijing get?

Who the hell cares she has 17 majors. "why this happened for Serena" you are saying it like something bad happened to her or like she's complaining. Again, she has 17 majors and Hingis has 5. I am sure Hingis would trade with her any day to have what Serena has. I know i would rather have 17 majors than being #1 for 209 weeks and may I ask during those 209 weeks how many majors did Martina win...she use to run from tournament to tournament to keep that #1 title and it did her in.

After The Sisters etal started beating her, Hingis did resort to

points chasing by playing every week to keep the No 1 rank

That's probably why she had the problem with her feet.

That's why Vika can't catch Serena this year. She won Beijing last year and is defending 1000 points, plus QF at Tokyo and SF from Tour Championships.

Vika is not playing well and like Jokovic is slowly treading into a slump....next year will be telling for Zenga:dodgy:

I'm surprise Vika is as close as she is to Serena. One has 9 tourney wins, including 2 majors, and the other has 3 tournies and 1 major.

Is Maria still around? I heard they had a funeral for her career given that it is dead:) I am going to miss that ole stiff soulless robot. BKA: Serena whipping post.

She isn't really that close Calvy. I believe the difference is 3300 points. To Vika's credit, she is holding a major, won Cinci and Dubai. Was a finalist at the USO, Rome, Carlsbad and performed well at RG. She has been the 2nd best player this year which is reflected in her ranking.

Sorry, but Maria is marching to the beat of a different drum

these days. And Serena is keeping the beat.

Next week the gap between Serena and Vika will increase over 4000 points no matter what Serena does.

Serena is at 156 weeks, Monica is at 178 weeks, those 22 weeks take us well into the next year before Serena catches Monica.

I wonder how many points Serena has to defend between now and after AO 2014.
