Zverev looked solid today. I think he is smart enough to understand the importance of the situation and mature enough to not be overwhelmed by it. We shall see.

well that's that. Very comfortable for Sasha.

It's funny.. I like Jodar. But I've been having a huge argument with a friend of mine for the last week about Jodar vs Fonseca. He claims that Jodar has higher upside because of how he's started his professional career. I argued that Fonseca has been blooded, tested. The scouting report is out on Joao, and yet he's progressing nicely. Taken out Ruud and Novak here. I don't believe that Jodar has shown me anything more than he's going to be a top 10 player. I haven't seen enough to tell me he's going to challenge Sincaraz. While I believe Fonseca has shown he has the weapons to challenge those guys.

I'm a bit pissed off actually because I actually like Jodar, but you know how it gets when you've been put in a situation to argue against someone. I should feel more disappointed about this result, but I won't lie. All I want to do is call my friend up and gloat at him:face-with-tears-of-joy:

PS, Mensik could make it a moot point today, so I'm definitely not doing that yet anyway!

I'm kind of routing for Zverev in a strange way. I know his flaws, and I get why people don't like him much. But, I also see that gaping window of opportunity for him.
me too. I think he's one of those who objectively is too good not to have at least one.

I saw the first set, when he was down 2-5, and I thought it was going to be the same old Zverev again.

Zverev, for once, made the necessary adjustments, and controlled the rest of the match.

Oh, all those things are true, for sure. Also, something on his attitude rub me the wrong away. This is probably the heaviest bias at play here.

You have a point about micro-adjustments and time on tour, but here is the thing. I have seen other aggressive players arriving, his case seemed worst, but... it could be his wingspan, which is huge, so when he misses, he misses by a lot. And I am talking about shots were he was completely balanced, with time, perfect set up. Some rally shots as well. But, again, I will need to watch a few more matches to consolidate or dismiss my opinion (matches, not highlights).

And, the way he was being outplayed by PCB caught my attention. And he never figured it out, it was PCB who dissapeared of that match.
I agree with you that Fonzie has higher upside. He has everything it takes to be a top 5, #1 challenger and multi-Slam winner. He's the most talented young player on tour not named Sincaraz.

As for Jodar, it still feels a bit early. I agree with mrzz that he's at least a top 10 guy, and jumping from a complete unknown in the Next Gen Finals to a Slam QF half a year later is pretty impressive. But we also need to see how the tour adjusts to him and how he counter-adjusts. He might be more of a "show-er" than a "grow-er," for all we know. Time will tell. But he's still a big talent who is likely to have a very good career, but I'm far less confident predicting greatness for him than I am Fonseca, especially after Joao's last two. The Novak match really sealed for me: That was some big boy tennis - a level you just don't see from lesser talents.

Kouame is the other guy to emerge this year and show immense potential. I really like what I've seen from him this tournament, but he's so young and we've got a long way to go.

Fonseca's rise reminds me a lot of Alcaraz's, and Jodar's more of Sinner's. Remember, when Sinner was right around Jodar's age, he beat a 23-year-old version of Zverev (who was fresh off a US Open final run) en route to a French Open QF appearance (where he lost to an unbeatable version of Nadal).

Zverev has been impressively consistent in being a top 5 player for most of his career.

I dunno, he’s a jerk but maybe finally winning a Slam will make him more of an arrogant jerk but it might make him a more mellow jerk or maybe it will make him a less defensive jerk.

Two totally feel shots from Mensik to break. That soft backhand passing shot and the forehand drop volley were great touches. I did not know he had the touch, Dangerous dude.

Mensik wins the 2nd set 6-3, to go up 2 sets. However, Fonseca has come back from 2 sets down before in this tournament (most notably against Djokovic).

I cant see Fonseca winning this match now, he is tired to me, making too many UFE
Kudos to Mensik he has been playing a great game, coming to the net when he can, he has produced some great passing shots as well

Worst match of Fonseca's career so far. Ugh. But Mensik is indeed playing well (vomiting emoji here).
Passing you a bucket my dear Mrzz, ( for vomit ) I feel Fonseca is tired making UFE that he usually doesent do
Yep Mensik has surprised me in ways, he really has lifted his game, well done to him
