It will happen. Maybe not now, but sooner than you think. AI is partly about pattern recognition. And you train it. You show it every call ever made, and every blown call ever made and why the call was blown. It will store that information way better than any human can . It is coming. For your job and mine tooDarth.. you know damn well you cant use technology to call fouls.. no player could make it past the 2nd quarter without fouling out.. Come on people be REAL.. You need the human factor in physical sports like Basketball and Football. Darth, I am surprised at you.. I know you something about organized sports especially those sports that are played in the playground and at the YMCA type of settings. No way the NFL and NBA could remove the human factor.
This is my last time trying to make this point.. If you use AI in basketball and football, there will be ten times as many fouls and penalties.the flow of the game would be slowed to a snail's pace.. I am trying to be transparent.. Its not possible if you have played organized sports that every play there's contact. It will happen. Maybe not now, but sooner than you think. Human factor is nice, I am all for it. But I also know 80% of all airline disasters are because of human error.
AI will not care about whose home it is. It will not worry about fan reaction, unpaid bills, a sleepless night or the slight flue or the headache ...It will be better. When the time comes.
It’s possible both of you are correct. And what you hit on is the biggest challenge they’d have moving to AI refs. There could be a hold called on the offensive line every play in the NFL, and practically every pass play could be a hold on the secondary for the slightest contact. In the NBA, how do you train AI not to call every ticky tack foul. What about guys jockeying for position for rebounds…I think it’d be tough compared to tennis. This is my last time trying to make this point.. I hear your point, I disagree with it, that's all. It is not valid. You know what AI is doing right now, without you realizing? Everything. You think human eye , knowledge and reaction time is faster or better than AI? Keep dreaming brother. You are hang up in human contact. It is not hard to solve what contact is legal and what contact is not. If a human being can learn it, AI can learn it a million times better and without bias. This is my last time trying to make this point.. There’s grabbing and holding on by every player ..how is AI going to determine the level of an infraction by a player..it’s not possible..how many times have we seen a player’s jersey grabbed by an opposing player..again 6 fouls by every player would be consumed before the 2nd qtr..can you imagine a game when Step, Lebron, Antman or the Alien has 5 fouls before halftime..trust me on this I know what I am talking aboutI hear your point, I disagree with it, that's all. Try it with your favorite AI program. It can already do it. I have tried. Listen to what GROK says about this:
- Basketball foul rules are well-defined (e.g., illegal contact, hand-checking, blocking vs. legal defense, charging, reaching in, etc.). I have strong knowledge of NBA/FIBA rules and common referee standards.
- With access to video (especially if it's on X/Twitter), I can use tools to extract interleaved frames + subtitles/timestamps. That lets me analyze the sequence of movement, point of contact, who initiates it, body positioning, and outcome — which is often enough to judge legality.
- Key visual cues I’d look for:
- Point of contact: Arm vs. torso, hands vs. body, verticality, etc.
- Who displaces whom: Defender establishing legal guarding position first?
- Speed and force: Incidental vs. impactful contact.
- Player reaction and ball impact: Does it affect the shot or dribble unnaturally?
- Angle and timing: Was the defender already set? Was it a late hit?
Just test it, upload two videos, one a foul, one a close call, it tells you which is which. The shortcoming is not about the human contact, it is timing. AI needs to analyze the incident frame by frame. It may take a 4-5 seconds. But It will not always. It is getting faster and smarter.
All I am saying.
You don't. AI already KNOWS about that stuff. It can TELL what is incidental contact and what is not. It has been tested already. It just is not fast enough to blow a whistle yet...if you call 5 seconds slow. There’s grabbing and holding on by every player ..how is AI going to determine the level of an infraction by a player..it’s not possible..how many times have we seen a player’s jersey grabbed by an opposing player..again 6 fouls by every player would be consumed before the 2nd qtr..can you imagine a game when Step, Lebron, Antman or the Alien has 5 fouls before halftime..trust me on this I know what I am talking about
Thanks..it’s not possible brother..can you imagine how many traveling calls and like you mentioned in football there’s holding by both teams every play..who would want to watch a game like thatIt’s possible both of you are correct. With that said…you can’t stop what’s coming. There likely will be the day where AI can ref football and basketball very well compared to the trash human refs we suffer through![]()
I have worked in cybersecurity for the past ten years..I teach AI to my team, organizations, vendors and clients or customers..I think I know what I am talking about. Darth knows better and he is just edging this along a bit.You don't. AI already KNOWS about that stuff. It can TELL what is incidental contact and what is not. It has been tested already. Dude, I don't know how up to date you follow tech stuff but if an entity can do surgery, it can fucking ref a basketball game. It is not rocket science.
you keep missing the point.. NoOne would watch an NFL or NBA game without referees and officials. go back and think about the logic.. Yes AI is astonishing but sports are made for humans not AI or ML automation.. next thing you are gonna suggest AI fembot over a real woman for sex jajajaja,, Dude let it goThen you should know at least 50 things that AI does right now better than humans and more difficult than refereeing a basketball game.
Human refs constantly miss things where attention to more than one issue is at hand. No human ref can tell you if there was a slight tripping on the feet while he is watching for contact with the hands during a jump shot. Not possible. Human eyes and brain do not work like that. AI is not missing that, ever. In that sense yes, there will be more stoppage because of nothing being missed.
Either way, if in 5 years we do not have AI refs in basketball, it will only be because of nostalgic reasons... or the ref's union.![]()

He needs help. OKCs perimeter defense is none existent. I know it is pick your poison with Wemby but a 2 is better than 3.SGA balling
Dude Wimby has dropped two 3 in transitionWemby needs to do serious work on his shooting. Game hasn’t slowed down for him yet
Chet has been called out by all the so called NBA pundits such as Perk and Shaw..they said he is getting punker and running scared.. Chet is timidIf the Spurs pull it off, it will be well deserved. They are playing their hearts out..
OKC can maybe blame it on the absence of Williams but if I am OKC, I blame it on the presence of Holmgren. The guy has done nothing all series.
He has one quarter left to show something, anything....
