Monte Carlo is easily the swankiest stop on the ATP tour. A small independent principality on the French Riviera, Monaco evokes wealth, privilege, with a whiff of James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock.

Center Court at the Monte Carlo Country Club is the most majestic in all of tennis, directly overlooking the Mediterranean, with the inevitable yachts cozying into view.

Monaco is home to the Grimaldi Royal Family and has a rich heritage of sporting events including the Monaco Grand Prix. It's also home to the world famous casino, the harbour and world class ballet and opera.

Much anticipation about the returns of Murray and Djokovic, and, of course, Nadal's return to clay after a very promising start to the year. Roanic also back from injury. Fed not playing. Any news on Kei? I think the draw comes out tomorrow.

Raonic has withdrawn from the tourney citing hamstring injury who otherwise would have been seeded 4th.

I think Dominic Thiem is the toughest QF opponent that any of the top 4 seeds could draw. Rafa will draw either Andy or Novak for the SF which is a familiar thing from the past decade.

P.S: I had to modify the seeds. These are the correct seeds.

So, Rafa lucked out. Moving up from 5 to 4 is a big deal than moving up from say 6 to 5.

Rafa can still draw Dominic and that can be a good match. Dominic reached SF at IW. So, he should be in some form.

Andy or Novak would not be able to play their best tennis I would think. It should take some matches for them to get primed. You never know though.

Shall Rafa face a primed Novak or Andy in the semis (if they SHOW UP), it will be a great match. Litmus test for both.

You are right and the OP is wrong. Rafa is ranked 5th and as Federer is not playing MC, Rafa legitimately gets the 4th seed (and it has nothing to do with Milos dropping out).

Were you looking at the entry list? If so, yes that would have used the rankings from some time ago. But the current ranking would be used for the seeding.
