The opening round of the Men’s Olympic Doubles in Rio was littered with surprises and upsets.
The French pairing of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut who were top seeds for the event crashed out to Colombia’s Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in straight sets 7-6(4) 6-3 and they were followed by the Murray brothers who were representing Great Britain and the second seeds.
The Murrays went down 7-6(6) 7-6(14) in two hours and two minutes after saving six match points in the second set.
Andy Murray said “The way the match went; it was a tough one to lose but it just wasn’t meant to be. We saved a lot of match points but we just didn’t take our chances.†The British pair squandered five set point opportunities in the second stanza.
French hopes following the Herbert/Mahut loss were extinguished altogether when the remaining medal hopes, fourth seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils fell victim to the American duo of Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram 6-1 6-4.
