Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez of Spain defeated the Canadian pairing of Vasek Pospisil and Doubles legend Daniel Nestor 7-6(1), 7-6(4) in a hotly contested match on Court 3 at the Rio venue. Court 3 does not have Hawkeye, so Nadal had requested the match be moved to a court that did, considering the winners would be assured of a medal.

The Mallorcan’s request was turned down and three disputed calls went against the Canadians. Nestor was particularly unhappy with proceedings, directing his dissatisfaction at the umpire “I’ll shake your hand, but that was a disgrace.”.

Nadal has been hampered by a wrist injury in the lead up to the Games and would later withdraw from the Mixed Doubles with the congestion of fixtures becoming a concern.

Nadal and Lopez will face off in the Saturday’s final against the Romanian pair Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau who defeated the American tandem of Steve johnson and Jack Sock. The win ensures a first Olympic medal ever for Romanian tennis.

The pair were always in control of the match and ended up 6-3, 7-5 winners to book their place in the final.
