Fils is just a better player, more upside. Cobolli is sort of in the De Minaur vein: he's got a good floor level but there's a limit to how good he can play, and he's probably only going to win a big event if he's playing a similar player and/or someone better has a bad day.
I was noticing how Cobolli consistently drops the ball short and I knew it would be target practice for Arthur. I think i saw Fils hit a few fh over 90 plus mph.. he blistered the ball

I like to think about how a player's actual performance compares to how they're perceived and/or notoriety. I feel like Frances Tiafoe is spoken off--in terms of how frequently and how well--as if he was a better player than he's actually been. People talk about him like he's been a consistent second tier type - a Berdych or Tsonga - and often in the mix as a darkhorse. Maybe this is because he is one of the better Americans of the last decade; maybe its because he was a highly regarded prospect a decade ago; maybe its because he has a big, likable personality. Probably a combination of all of the above.

I was a bit surprised to note that he's only played in the final of a big event once: Cincinnati two years ago, when he lost to Sinner. He's only won four titles, and just his first 500 this year at Halle. He briefly reached #10 a few years ago, but has been more of a consistent top 20-30 guy. He's comparable to someone like Roberto Bautista Agut, but with more deepish Slam runs but fewer titles.

Anyhow, I can't shake the sense that he could win a Masters - that his darkhorse status is legit. But...as I said, I think this is Arthur Fils' to lose, and Foe might not get past the red-hot Nakashima.

I thought it had been a while since an "odd winner" of this tourn., but checking back,. Coric won just 4 yrs. ago upsetting Rafa in the 2nd Rd.! This yr.'s draw was a mess early w/ the WD's of Sinner & Alcaraz, then the systematic upsets of other top players! There was carnage! :fearful-face::astonished-face::angry-face::yawningface:

Borna Coric - that's a name I haven't heard in some time. I just looked him up and he's still only 29.

Coric was born in 1996, the same year as Medvedev, Berrettini, and Khachanov. He seems older because he was the first of that group to show up on the radar. There was a gap between when Lost Gen had established themselves and the bulk of Next Gen hadn't really emerged, say around 2014-15, when Coric and Kyrgios showed up, with pretty much no other young guys on the radar. So in a way, Kyrgios (b. 1995) and Coric (b. 1996) were the "first" Next Genners.

EDIT: I forgot about Lucas Pouille (b. 1994), who also showed around then.

Rafa had no business getting upset by Lucas Pouille at the USO.. that was a real low point for the Nadal fans

Shapo needs to retire.. he had a cup of coffee against a jaded Nadal I think it was in Canada over 8 years ago and havent done anything since. I dont know how he is still in the top 100. Ben looks tired.. He collected his appearance fee and now he can go watch tape of Sinners matches. I doubt very seriously that Carlos is playing the US Open.
I am surprised Carlos is playing USO without a warn up tourney

So Fils beat Cobolli 3 & 4.

All credit to Fils , who is at his highest ranking and reached the finals. He’s a dangerous player at the USO.

As to Cobolli, he had 4 grueling 3 set matches back to back, not surprised he finally hit the wall.

Agreed.. its only so much a body can withstand on the hardcourts. Fils, Tiafoe and Jodar are monsters on the hardcourts. Cobolli had a good week and his clay court game has transcended to the hard court very well.

I think Fils will boss the points and overpower Foe. Hopefully Jess doesn't have a letdown in the final after sending Iga out. But just like Wimby, Coco will have a slight edge w/ movement and volleying. I could see Coco winning it in 3 sets again.
maybe we should have a poll about how many sleeveless tank top shirts will Foe sweat through today.. I say 8 shirts

Nakatomi hit the wall last night too. SF in DC, Final in Canada and SF last night. I don't think he's ever went that deep in consecutive weeks.

Fils made an interesting comment as far as the Cincy tournament. He feels it will be a pro American crowd today but not an overly bias crowd such as the ones who are in Rio or at the French Open. I agree ,, Arthur has a way of engaging with the crowd but the F I O fans will be chanting too.. It should be a fun match
Frances vs Lil Frenchie..

I have only seen Roger and Novak roll out of bed without any warm up tourneys. We shall see.
not true. Serena was notorious for doing it and Chuck to a degree did it this year. He didn't play any warmups for AO and won it anyway. That's coming off of the season vacation and cutting JCF loose
