The Tournament:

The Cincinnati Masters or Cincinnati Open (branded as the Western & Southern Open for sponsorship reasons) is an annual outdoor hardcourt tennis event held in Mason, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. The event started on September 18, 1899, and is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States that is still played in its original city.

The tournament is the second largest summer tennis event in the U.S. after the US Open, as its men's event is one of the Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour, and its women's event is one of the WTA 1000 events on the WTA Tour.

About Cincinnati:

Cincinnati is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hamilton County. Settled in 1788, the city is located at the northern side of the confluence of the Licking and Ohio rivers, the latter of which marks the state line with Kentucky. The city is the economic and cultural hub of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Yeah, this is the tournament that Novak has figured out in the 2nd half of his career. This is the one that eluded him until he finally broke through in 2018. He won the 2020 edition in New York, and again in 2023 (I believe that was the last time he entered this event).

A 4th title here would make him the oldest Masters 1000 Champion (that is currently held by Federer), put him within one of Federer's title count, and make it 21 straight years with a title.

Yeah, this is the tournament that Novak has figured out in the 2nd half of his career. This is the one that eluded him until he finally broke through in 2018. He won the 2020 edition in New York, and again in 2023 (I believe that was the last time he entered this event).

Couldn't get past his 1st match going down in 3 sets to Tirante! Djokovic was struggling early in the 2nd set; esp. during long games! He's done!

I could see Novak winning a couple more small titles to grab the titles record, but I'm doubting that he can win any more big titles, let alone Slams. He seems to declining with each hiatus. I mean, he looked good in Wimbledon until he pooped out. I don't expect anything different at the US Open, and think he'll be out before the SF.

Yeah, it might be time to accept that Novak's window is closing. Not only is Novak nowhere near his 2023 standard, he is well off the pace from 2024 and 2025:

2023: 56 wins (7 titles, 3 slams)
2024: 37 wins (1 title)
2025: 39 wins (2 titles)
2026: 14 wins

If Novak doesn't make a deep run at the US Open, he might finish with less than 20 wins (his lowest total since 2005, the last time he didn't win a title). Novak has won at least 37 matches every year from 2006 to 2025.

Yes Maam its true.. Zed is having issues with your favorite nuisance Cam Norrie.. Nole and Lamonf got bounce in the first round.. I dont think that has ever happen that those two ever got bounce in the first round together .. the tournament director has to be on suicide watch by now

Among other issues, Novak's biggest challenge is stamina right now. Even a straight set win takes a lot out of him in a Slam these days. And players see this. Anyone who can just ride it out and take it to a 5th set will beat him at the US Open, after the 3rd round.

We saw the same thing happen to Federer post-2020 Australian Open. He came back not the same player post-pandemic. It seemed like heading into 2020 that Federer breaking the Connors match record was inevitable (especially after winning 53 matches in 2019), and it didn't even happen. Age 39 seems to be the absolute wall.

We've seen players like Federer, Djokovic, and Monfils have success at age 38, but all of them had a major regression at age 39.

I'm really hoping to see Fonseca go deep here and at the USO. He looked like he was breaking out at RG, but other than that, 2026 is very similar to 2025 - but without any titles (after his first two last year). Right now he's at #31 in the Race rankings after finishing #24 last year, so at best he's pretty much just consolidated in being a lower-end seeded guy (top 20-30ish).

Top 10 and a Masters would have been a good result for him this year. Top 20 and a few deep runs at big events and maybe another 250/500 title would be adequate, but a bit disappointing. Outside the top 20 has to be a serious disappointment.
