Andrew Murray was honored today with the Officer of the Order of the British Empire title for services to tennis, presented to him in Buckingham Palace by His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, Baron Carrickfergus, Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Personal Aide-de-Camp to Her Majesty The Queen.

Murray was asked afterwards whether he would be able to play in the Australian Open, and he said that he hopes so, but that he would only play if 100% fit.

From the BBC - Andy Murray receives OBE.

Congratulations to Andy Murray for his well-deserved OBE award and best wishes for him to return soon.

Respectfully,
masterclass

It is well-deserved, but I thought a knighthood was well-deserved too. I mean, Olympic Gold, and Silver, and the US Open and Wimbledon titles. Maybe they're waiting til he retires?

Fair play to him, though - and he's wise to wait before returning. Got to get it right with his back...

I wouldn't be shocked to see him get the knighthood eventually. These things can be political as well. So far he hasn't made any official statement about the Scottish Independence Referendum other than to say he'd think about it.

His various contributions to charity like he made after winning Queens Club this year, donating his entire winnings to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, should definitely help his cause for knighthood. He's still a young man, so he will probably be further evaluated as he gets older.

Respectfully,

Even if Andy is knighted in the next few years he would still be the youngest sportsman ever, and the youngest person in modern times to be given a knighthood. It's a pressure he can do without. I'd worry what effect being announced on court everywhere from Melbourne to London as Sir Andrew Murray would have on a man that is very private and pretty shy. "Sir Andrew Murray is challenging the call on the ....". Can you imagine?

I've no doubt Andy will get a knighthood at some point. I don't believe for a second that Andy's opinion on Scottish independence has any significance. Nor do I believe that Scotland will vote for it. Either way Andy won't get a vote and if he has any sense he'll stay quiet on the matter. He will be criticised whatever he has to say on the subject.

I'd like to applaud the impeccable timing of the drug testers who turned up at Andy's home today as he was getting ready for his trip to the Palace. Thankfully he wasn't late. I'm glad Andy saw the funny side.

Thanks for the photos, Iona, and congratulations to Andy on his OBE. I think the knighthood is inevitable, but it might be right to confer it after he retires. Well-deserved honor, at this stage, for sure. He faced the pressure of it, and came up with the goods. He absolutely deserves a medal for the pressure he endured.

You're welcome Moxie. There was a champagne reception afterwards but I don't think Andy had much time to enjoy it. I read that the other award recipients kept asking for a photo with him. By all accounts he was polite and very obliging. A journalist also managed to ask him if he would be supporting England in the world cup next year. Andy said he had been expecting that question after England qualified last week. It never ends. I guess on a special day for Andy and HIS sport it was too much to ask that a football question not come up. The journalists do it every year at Wimbledon. If it's not football it's cricket. It drives me insane.

BTW Andy also said it will be another 3-4 weeks before he'll pick up a racquet. Rehab is pretty slow.

Winning Wimbledon, an Olympic Gold + various masters titles. If they gave out OBEs for being boring, perhaps you could share your own pictures from the day you got honoured.

Andy Murray is tennis in the UK. The best male player we've had in nearly 80 years. A 2-time slam champion + an Olympic gold and silver medalist. I think that qualifies as 'services to tennis'.

Iona, Britbox and Moxie:

You are all patiently explaining why Andy got OBE. This assumes that the
other person is really ignorant of these things. I highly doubt it. Sometimes, it
is probably best to ignore.

Somethings are better ignored, but sometimes it's worth pushing back when someone tries to diminish a player's achievements through pettiness and personal animosity.

Andy Murray deserves PBE , no doubt about that but its not
my point of interest especially after some one bores you
years and refuses to show any type of improvement though
he have best coach .
