About Acapulco:
The oldest and best known of Mexico's beach resorts, and located on its west coast, The city is set on a large bay backed by high-rises and the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains. Acapulco once had a cache as a playground of the rich and famous, most notably in the 1950s-60s, hosting Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Frank Sinatra and Brigitte Bardot, amongst others. It is beautifully situated, and still famous for its nightlife.
Acapulco is relatively close to Mexico city, a mere 3 and a half hours drive. It is situated in a natural bay and very popular for water sports and aquatic activities.
The tournament was introduced to the ATP Tour in 1993, and began on the WTA Tour in 2001. It was played on outdoor red clay courts until 2013. The change to hard courts was introduced in 2014.
