Next Fonseca watch:
Two Brazilians will play one of the boys' singles semifinals, Luis Gustavo "Guto" Miguel and Leonardo Storck Franca. Both just turned 17.
Luis Guto Miguel is been on everyone's radar for a while already. He won an ITF W15 in doubles, playing with his brother, when he was 15. He's been playing local challengers in the last 6 to 9 months, I saw two of his matches. He was still 16 and was playing on equal terms with top #200 guys. Lots of potential, for our (low) local standards he is surely a very good prospect. Pretty sure the will get to the ATP top 100, almost sure he breaks in the top 50 (again, that's not usual for Brazilian tennis), but I would not be surprised if he achieves more than that. He will be in the next "next gen" conversation in no time. He is already the #1 junior and a hot favorite for this year's RG.
I would say he is a hybrid version of Fonseca and Tien. A lot of power (not as much as Fonseca, but pretty close), and a lot of movement, same level as Tien was in his junior days. Not sure about the tennis IQ, he is creative, but sometimes a bit too much. Head is not in the perfect place already as well, resembles a bit Thiago Wild (who is the pre-Fonseca, won the USOopen junior over Musetti a few years back, and the Santiago ATP as a teenager still).
Leonardo Storck had way less hype coming to this tournament, close to zero professional experience (one ITF here and there). Just caugh glimpses of his quarter final match against the #4 in the boys ranking, convincing win, has all the shots, head in the right place, but still needs power on his one handed backhand.
Both will benefit from the Fonseca hype, and also from his advice, given the kid has the head totally in the right place. Luis Miguel surely needs it...
