An ATP World Tour 250 event, the Winston-Salem Open is the last men’s tournament on the Emirates Airline US Open Series prior to the US Open. Isner is in. I think it was @GameSetAndMath that said he would play here, thereby potentially over-playing before the USO.

Big John was born in Greensboro. It is an earshot from Winston-Salem. So, it is his home tourney.

It may not be too bad for Isner considering he skipped Washington DC 500 and bombed out in opening match in Montreal.
Further, this tourney has Saturday finals and they give a free chopper ride for the finalists to NYC (at least they used to before).

Probably fair question. As you said, John really wants to and has to play there, but if he's looking at his chances at the Open, and he should be, maybe he decided it's time to cut bait.
