Serena leads the series 6-2
upload_2018-7-12_10-35-59.png

All but one of their meetings have come on a hard court. Obviously Serena won the last meeting which was the 2016 Wimbledon final in straights. Kerber has won a slam final against Serena denying her from breaking Graf's record. Can she duplicate the magic and keep Serena from history again?

Serena in 3 I guess. I'm giving Kerber a set because Serena is getting to retirement age.

I am going to pick Kerbie here in three.

First of all, Kerbie is a big girl. She won't be intimidated, cry or blown out. She has already won two slams. Moreover, this is not her first Wimebldon final. She had been here before. Also, she is one of very few players who have actually beaten Serena in a GS final. So, independent of the result, this match will be tightly contested.

While Serena managed to reach the finals, her opponents were very weak and so it is fair to say that she is not yet been really tested. She faced unseeded opponents for the first five matches in a row and then met a player who lost in the first round for the last five years in SF. So, she would need to play at a much much higher level than she had been playing so far. But, you cannot raise the level overnight. Here is the complete list of her opponents so far: A. Rus, V. Tomova, Mladenovic, Rodina, Giorgi and Gorgeous

On the other hand, Angie had come out successfully against a wide variety of good players.

1R: Vera Zvonareva (former Wimbledon finalist and a qualifier here)
2R: C. Liu (last year's girls champ and a qualifier here)
3R: Osaka (seed #18 and IW champ and young thing)
4R. Bencic (although not seeded, it was only due to injuries; she upset Garcia seeded #6)
QF: Dasha (seeded #14 and this is the match of the tournament on women's side so far)
SF: Ostapenko (seeded #12, RG champ and former girls champ at Wimby)

Serena will lose the first set to Angie, Serena will adjust and win the second set, but Kerbie will have the last word in the final set.

I gotta go Serena. Angie is too much of a back-board, and Serena has too much will to win.

Serena is my pick. It's all about matchups and grass is too much in Serena's favor.

I would be more worried if Serena hadn't already been pushed to 3 sets, plus she's improving every round. I like Kerber, but she also hasn't played an opponent of Serena's level, she is steady and moves well and that is enough to crack most of her opponents, but again, it's Serena on grass who even at 80 % can beat most of the field.

Above all else, Grass favors big serves and first strike tennis, and we all know has who the edge of the two contestants. PLus Kerber's OK serve is ripe for Serena's power return of serves

Win or lose the match is on Serena's racket. If she serves well she has a huge advantage and her movement IMO is good enough.

Absolutely disgusting that we have a finalist who just one month ago dodged a test. Disgusting. Will not watch this and anyone who believes in the integrity of sport should not either. Not a good look for tennis or the WTA CEO for brushing this aside.

One more thing, it doesn't matter if this thing matches Margaret Court's slam count or goes on to surpass her count, it will never be the GOAT.

Not really expecting it, but I'll take a punt on Angie. Not seen that much of Wimbledon to be honest, but Serena didn't look hugely impressive in the bits of matches I saw.

I agree with you, but she got a whole lot better by the QF and SF.

First of all, that final in 2005 is like the 2008 match on the men's side. It may be a once in a lifetime performance that can't be reproduced. That being said, I don't really know what your definition of competitive is but there have been some great finals since then:
- 2006 Amelie/Justine played a great 3 set grass court match filled w/ variety and drama
- 2012 Serena/Aga played a very good match that went 3 sets
- 2016 Serena/Angie played a great match. It didn't go 3 sets but was highly competitive
