Pre-match and in match discussion can go here and it would be nice to sticky this thread.
My take:

This match-up has little history, mostly due to the youth of 22 year old Dominic Thiem. Novak has won twice in straight sets on hard courts in the Miami and Shanghai Masters. But this is the biggest Clay event on tour.

So this leads to many questions:

Will Novak Djokovic feel the pressure of finally winning at Roland Garros, knowing who might await him in the final? Or will he overwhelm the youngster on the biggest clay stage in tennis?

Will Dominic Thiem prove he is the best of the young players, at least on clay, and manage to beat the #1 player in the world, or will he crumble like so many of his fellow youngsters have?

Dominic appears unafraid and hits a heavy hard ball, much like Stan.. Will this give Dom an advantage in this match, or will Novak be up to the task and get most everything back with interest and frustrate the lad?

Will Novak be able to calm himself? Lately he has been quick to anger, both in Rome and Paris, the latest incident coming close to causing himself to be defaulted if his frustrated flinging of his racquet had injured the linesman who adroitly averted a Head titanium thrashing. Will he be in control of himself if the match begins to go badly?

Symbolic for Thiem and a new generation?

Finally, who will win this battle of players trying for their first Roland Garros Title? Novak has had many chances but come up short. Thiem is in his first major semifinal. I say fortune favors the brave. Good luck and a good match to both players.

Respectfully,

I'm going Novak in 4. I think Dominic is a year away from winning majors but I'm loving his game and that single handed backhand particularly.

I think it's competitive... Nole will need to be firing on all cylinders or we'll have an upset on our hands.

As long as Djoker is able to avoid errant racquets hitting lines people, refrains from touching the chair umpire over a disputed call, and doesn't accidentally hit any ball kids with a tennis ball, he should win this in three. Thiem is the next big thing, but the first slam semi against the world #1 will be a little too much for the young Austrian.

Exactly. Djoker is peaking for the last few matches. He has a healthy respect for what young Thiem can do

Yep, Djoker knows when he needs to up the tempo and today is one of them. I don't think Thiem will go away though - he'll keep Djoker honest.

Poor kid is playing against the wall today. No way around or through. Just got broken in the 2nd set.

Question: How demoralizing is it to throw your best at someone with so few positive results?

I guess all good for the learning process! Novak is on fire. Thiem hasn't played bad at all... it will show him what it takes to win future slams. He's currently studying at the University of Grand Slam Tennis and Professor Djokovic is his tutor.

Lifeline for Dominic. Credit to the guy for hanging in there... Djokers dropped a level briefly... we'll see how long it lasts.

Yep, Tuned into the Murray match for a bit and then returned to see it was 5-3... now 5-4. Baptism of Fire for young Dominic Thiem.

Novak to serve for a place in the final.

Less than two hours. Dominic's consolation is that he has entered the top ten.
