Today marks the 10th anniversary of Fed becoming #1 for the first time.
It was Monday, Feb. 2nd 2004. He had just won AO in 2004 which propelled him
to achieve the #1 ranking.

See the celebratory article from ATP web site below.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2014/01/5/Federer-10-Year-Anniversary-No-1.aspx

In 10 years, there are 520 weeks. Of that Fed was ranked #1 for 302 weeks. In other words
Fed was #1 for more than half of the last 10 years. What an incredible achievement!

To celebrate it let us clap 10 times.

:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap:clap

Can you remember what you were doing 10 years ago on this occasion?

What was I doing in Feb 2004? It doesn't resonate as a career year... but probably trying to convince all and sundry that Marat Safin was going to come good and be the next dominant #1.

I have no idea what I was doing on February 2 2004, but more than likely having a fight with my then girlfriend. Don't feel bad for me. I was way too young, it's OK. I was her first too... Moving on then.

Would have still been a freshmen in college. Roger was really on my radar in 2002 when you could see the flashes of brilliance (even though his big win before 2003 was at 2001 Wimbledon). After seeing Wimbledon 2003 and some of the YEC that year I figured he would become the solid #1 and standout player of his generation. Obviously didn't think it'd be to the degree it was.

I was a year away from getting back into playing tennis regularly again--after not having played except a handful of times in the prior fifteen years. Back then, I knew who Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and the Williams sisters were. I didn't even know of a top player from Switzerland. But as Bob once sang--the times they were a changing.

Ditto! Before Fed, we were all ready to anoint Sampras as "The GOAT!" He had been the most impressive in the Open era since Laver and we forgave his lack of FO titles! He more than compensated with multiple Wimbledons and USO's, but it was really wrong since Roger's come along and eclipsed Pete by so much! Even Rafa has a good chance to shoot past him in total majors; even if not as impressive! Roger's acquired just about every meaningful record; like Navratilova and Graf on the ladies side! :clap :clap :clap

I wasn't really following tennis much, I know that. I didn't really get serious until a few years ago, although was a very casual fan for a couple decades, but never more than following the Slams.

As for what I was doing, I can remember quite clearly. My wife of a year and a half (now 11+ years) were in the middle of 7 months traveling in Asia. I believe in early February we were in northern India, possibly Varanasi, preparing to trek the Himalayans in Nepal.
