BTW the old boy Novak :) will be playing in the Giorgio Armani Tennis classic June 23 to June 27, along with Sinner, Shelton, Cobolli, Paul Lehecka, Perricard just to name a few.

He was 5-1 up in the third set. We’re not talking about him going to an exhausting fifth set - he was a six inch putt away from the next round and he shanked it..
If Sinner didn't have that bad of a track record in closing out matches, I probably would have dismissed it as a one-off. (And let's face it, if Sinner was a better closer, he'd probably have close to ten slams by now.)

But his history of not being able to close out matches is definitely relevant. Remember, Sinner was serving for the match at the French Open final last year... and he choked! It may be part of a bigger pattern.

Could you imagine Rafa ever choke a lead like this? What about Federer? Or even Djokovic?

None of the greats would ever blow a lead like this. Sinner does, and that's why he has only 4 slams, instead of like 8 or 9.

Players choke, that’s just to be human. Roger, Rafa, Novak all have choked in big matches.

But there’s no way Sinner choked that match away in Paris this year..

Watched a few reels of the 2008 final and it staggers me bedpost thinking there’s people who think there’s been a greater match since. What’s wrong with them? It’s not only the symbolism was at the level of perfection, but the standard of play as the match tilted severally on its axis, it was incredible. That third set tiebreak ought to be hanging in the Louvre. Federer was lucky to reach a fourth set - or maybe he wasn’t. Outplayed in sets one and two, he was 5-2 behind in the tiebreak and he stood his ground.

Still, it would have been terrible if he’d won. The symbolism only works when the right fella wins…

I still watch the final it was a incredible match for many reasons, though I was saying to AP the other day 2007 Wimbledon final, I thought at one time in the match Rafa was going to win, his level was high, though he came back in 2008 and won, what a match!

Well you remember in the 2007 final Rafa went 4-0 up in the fourth set and the Battersea Dogs Home erupted into a howl of dogs barking when Rogers high pitched whine kicked in and he told us, “it’s killing me!?”

Rafa then pulled up lame and the trainer came on, and Rafa won the set only 6-2 instead of 6-loving it?

I believe that if Rafa’s hadn’t gotten injured he’d have won it, easily…

Rafa's knees discomfort appeared at the wrong bloody time Meh, then again the curse of Rogers bloody clutch serving?
It was the most painful loss for Rafa, he thought after that match he may never win at Wimbledon? little did he know what was to happen in the 2008 final :)

This is a weird Wimbledon for me. If Carlitto was there, he would have been the hands down favorite. Without him, I have no one. Nole runs out of steam by the semis, especially if he has to play extra sets on the way. Sinner...maybe.
I have a feeling that someone whose game is best suited to grass will take this one. We will have a new champion. I don't have any names. I don't even know if we have grass court specialists any more. If we have one, he is winning it. :)

I noticed Dude ranked all these wannabees ahead of FAA and you have to give him a slight nod. He's actually performed well on the grass over the years and probably has a better record and game than 5-8

You think Shelton would have the head on him to win this? Of the 8 you mention, I would whittle it down to only 4:

Djokovic
Sinner
Zverev (who has to be feeling it)
Fonseca (who has the temperament)
I don't see Ben as a fave. He's still playing alot of boneheaded shots from the baseline, trying to deflate each ball on court. His return still needs work and he needs way more variety and cut the daddy purse strings, but he won't.

For me, I'll take 2001 over 2008. All 3 matches in the semis (Ivanisevic/Henman and Rafter/Agassi) and the final (Ivanisevic/Rafter) were absolute classics. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. The 3 days to play out the semifinals, and then the Championship on People's Monday (something that won't ever happen again). Hard to believe this year will be the 25th anniversary of that.

With 2008, the semis absolutely sucked, which is why I'll never remember that one as fondly as 2001. (Plus, earlier in that 2001 tournament, some 19-year-old named Roger Federer defeated Pete Sampras.)

The final of 2008 Wimbledon has already gone into the history books, widely considered the " Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played" because of its extreme drama, unprecedented shot making and the clash between 2 titans at their absolute peak of their rivalry. The 4 hour 50 minute epic marked a monumental passing of the torch in sport.

I am certain Kieran would 100% agree with me, and others ........................
It clearly out does your semis of 2001 :) and the final of 2001
BTW I remember watching the final of 2001, with my daughter aged 14, we were both big Rafter fans, she will be 40 this year, you must have a great memory back in 2001, you would have been young, seeing that you are now in your 30's btw

Yeah, I like his mentality, his grit, power, loads of ability. I don’t know how he’ll like the grass but I don’t see others in your ten winning it, or - I just hope they don’t. I don’t want tennis to become like golf, with Wyndham Who winning majors…
You mean like the WTA? Haha
